Human remains consumed by bear discovered in area of western Colorado campground

A death investigation is underway in Colorado’s Mesa County after human remains were found scavenged and scattered near a campground and picnic area on July 5.

According to a report on the matter, the remains were found in the area of the Wild Rose Picnic Area off of Lands End Road on the Grand Mesa. After the remains were confirmed to be human, a death investigation was launched.

The individual’s cause of death was still undetermined at last report, though it is believed that the scavenged and scattered remains had been consumed by a bear and likely other wildlife. At this time, no indication has been made that a bear was involved in the individual’s death.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for determining the person’s identity and cause-of-death. Investigators have asked the public for help in the case and are seeking any witnesses who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area of the Wild Rose Campground between June 22 and July 5. Potential witnesses can contact Investigator Jenna Reed at 970-244-3274.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife believes that there is no ongoing threat to human health and safety related to the case.
