New cafe will take over Secret Garden’s old home by Cheesman Park
A popular cafe spot on the edge of Denver’s Cheesman Park will reopen soon — but under a new name.
The Carriage House, a new European-style cafe, will open at the end of the month in the former home of Secret Garden, which abruptly closed last year following employees claiming City Street Investors was union busting while the owners stated the business was running out of money.
The cafe will be under a different ownership team including Denver entrepreneur John Goshcha and seasoned hospitality expert Jake Riederer, who had worked with OPEN Sandwiches, Congress Park Market, Work & Class and Super Mega Bien. Goshcha is the founder of several startups including Personality AI, Lucidity Lights, Native Voice and IdeaPaint, according to his LinkedIn.
The new cafe named after the Denver houses built to accommodate horse carriages will open in two phases, according to a news release sent Thursday.
The first phase will debut July 28.
The opening will include a menu of sandwiches, pastries, toastettes, salads, coffee, wine and beer on its outdoor patio or for to-go, the announcement said. The cafe located at the Tears McFarlane House, one of Denver’s historic mansions, has a patio with direct access to Cheesman Park.
The second phase is set to open in September.

The inside space will be entirely renovated with marble white counters, paneled walls, vintage mirrors and a Parisian-style checkerboard floor. It will also include a full cocktail bar and more menu offerings.
The menu was created by Riederer and 2025 James Beard semifinalist Melissa Yanc. Some dishes include a French onion grilled cheese with onion consommé, North African tuna pan bagnat with olives, artichoke hearts, boiled egg, spicy harissa and preserved lemon and toastettes of sliced focaccia topped with honey whipped ricotta and pepper jam or garlic-pistachio butter with balsamic reduction.
The Carriage House will roast coffee beans from Novo Coffee, sell baked goods from Black Box Bakery and sell bottled beers and wines, which can be taken out to Cheesman Park, the announcement said.
“This project started with a simple idea: create a spot in the neighborhood people would really want to spend time in.” Goscha, owner of The Carriage House, said in a release. “I love Cheesman Park and live in the neighborhood, so when I found out this spot was available, it felt like the right next step.”
The cafe at 1290 N. Williams St. will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will expand its hours to 8 p.m. once the cafe fully opens in September.
“We’re taking our time with the rollout, opening in phases with coffee and food first and the full bar to follow, because we want to get every detail right,” Goscha said.
