Popular state park closes boat ramps months ahead of norm amid dry conditions in Colorado

Another popular state park is set to close its boating ramp amid dry conditions.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the boat ramps at Barr Lake State Park near Brighton will close on Friday, July 10 at 9 p.m., set to remain closed throughout the rest of 2026. Low reservoir levels were cited as the reason for the closure, with this 1,950-acre reservoir fed by the South Platte river and water rights owned by the Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Company to be used for irrigation purposes.

The park started the 2026 season with the reservoir near full capacity, though depleted snowpack and use by water rights holders have decreased the water level to a point that boats will not be able to launch. This closure comes significantly ahead of the norm, with boat ramps at Barr Lake State Park typically closing at some point during fall.

Hand-launched vessels will still be allowed on the reservoir. Search and rescue options, however, may be limited with park officials working to figure out options for ranger boats and water rescue crafts. Those using the water after the boat ramp closure should expect extended rescue response times and know that they’re recreating at their own risk. Life jackets should be used at all times.

Per Colorado Parks and Wildlife, aquatic nuisance species inspections and decontaminations will remain available after the boat ramp closure, with those interested in that instructed to call the ranger phone number at 720-520-1876 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

This is yet another example of how the dry year is impacting outdoor recreation, adding to the list of reservoirs around the state where boating has been limited. Always check with a state park website while planning your trip to see if any potential changes will impact you.
