Aurora City Council to vote on tax increase oversight body, public comment changes
The Aurora City Council will vote on the creation of a tax increase oversight body and changes to the council public comment rules at Monday night’s meeting.
In the regular meeting, the council will consider a resolution to create an oversight committee for the use of tax funds for infrastructure projects.
In a recent council meeting, the council approved putting tax increases on the ballot for voters in November.
If passed Monday, the resolution would create a committee overseeing the use of that money. The committee would include 15 members appointed by the council.
Aurora’s sales taxes have not been raised since 1993. If voters approve raising taxes, the money would go toward “Build Up Aurora” to fund projects including the construction of Gun Club Road, updates to police and fire stations and transportation safety improvements.
Aurora’s sales and use tax would increase from 8.5% to 8.825% in the part of Aurora in Adams County, and from 8% to 8.325% in the part of Aurora in Arapahoe County.
In Monday’s study session, the council will vote on rule changes to the order and procedure of meetings.
The changes, brought forward by Mayor Pro Tem Alison Coombs, would crack down on public comment time rules and dedicate a specific time period for students under 18 years old to speak.
If the rule changes pass, public speakers who speak more than 10 seconds after their designated three-minute time limit would not be allowed to speak at the next council meeting.
The rule changes would also ban people who speak during the first public comment session from speaking during the second session, held at the end of every meeting.
Monday’s study session starts at 4:20 p.m. and the regular meeting will follow at 6 p.m. The regular meeting will take place in the Paul Tauer Aurora City Council Chamber, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway, and the study session will be livestreamed in the chamber.
Both meetings are available to watch online at AuroraTV.org and YouTube.com/TheAuroraChannel and on cable channels eight and 880 in Aurora.
The full meeting agenda is available on the city’s website.
