Campsite on working ranch featured on Hipcamp’s ’50 favorite places to camp in America’ list
Popular campsite booking website Hipcamp released a list of their ’50 favorite places to camp in America right now’ in recent days and a lone Colorado spot made the cut to be included.
Picks on the list were selected by the company’s editorial team, representing 35 American states and spanning a wide variety of camping styles from family farms to riverside spots to private campsites to public-land campgrounds, and more. With more than 500,000 American campsites found on the Hipcamp platform, the final list included just 0.01 percent of all available options – in other words, the list was very exclusive.
Without further ado, the Colorado campsite that was included was Valley of the Bear Ranch near Yampa and the Flat Tops Wilderness. With a 99% ‘thumbs up’ rating on the Hipcamp website, this camping option is said to come with amazing views and a great host, best for self-contained campers given that it doesn’t have toilets, showers, or potable water on-site. It was one of five ‘Mountain West’ campsites on Hipcamp’s list, along with two in Montana and one in both Idaho and Wyoming.
Star Host Barb describes the ranch as family-owned since the early 70s, with the campsite located in a small ranch pasture along the Bear River. It offers views of the Flat Tops and is exceptionally quiet with a big starry night sky. Campers should know that this site is at a functioning ranch, complete with friendly livestock guardian dogs who may visit campers, sheep, cows, and goats.
“Amazing spot by a creek with views of the Flat Tops and animals galore,” wrote a recent camper, also noting that their group was “pleasantly surprised by Antlers Restaurant and Flat Tops Cafe just down the road.”
It’s also worth noting that while this campsite offers an entertaining stay in itself, it’s also close to trails, water, and more thanks to its proximity to the Flat Tops Wilderness.
Vehicles under 24 feet are allowed, as are campfires if conditions are safe and fires are permitted. Up to eight guests can visit at a time with booking starting at $48 per night before service fees and taxes.
