News Nuggets: School supplies, sidewalk stamps and dealing with pet loss

For those who have ever wanted to leave their mark on the Mile High City, here’s your chance.

The City of Denver is hosting a sidewalk stamp contest. The winner will walk away with a $1,000 prize and the opportunity to have their design embedded in Denver’s sidewalks.

Sidewalk stamps have been around since the early 19th century. They served not only as a form of contractor signature but also as a legal source of accountability as concrete began to replace sidewalks over the years. The stamps would often include the contractor’s name, the date poured and sometimes a telephone number or office location.

The contest is open to artists of all ages and backgrounds living in Denver.
The deadline for submissions is July 31. For design specifications and submission details, visit denvergov.org/sidewalks.

School supply drive

The Denver Human Services annual school supply drive is now underway through July 31. Each year, DHS collects donated backpacks and school supplies to support Denver students served by the agency.

This year, the program needs water bottles and classroom essentials such as hand sanitizer, tissues and disinfecting wipes.

Donate school supplies online through the DHS Amazon.com registry. All items ship directly to Denver Human Services at 1200 Federal Blvd., Denver, CO 80204. For more information about the program or to volunteer, call (720) 944-4483 or email [email protected].

Pet loss grief support group

The Denver Animal Shelter hosts a regular pet loss grief support group from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of every month at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave.

Facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker, the support group is free to attend but has limited space. All attendees must RSVP by using the link below to reserve a spot. Sign-ups are first come, first served.

If the date is full, attendees can email  [email protected] to be added to the waitlist.
