Alpha Diallo signs with Nuggets, returns to Denver

Alpha Diallo is coming back to Denver.

The 29-year-old agreed to a one-year contract with the Nuggets on Sunday. Diallo, who spent his sophomore year of high school at Denver West, agreed to a $1.4 million deal, according to ESPN.

Diallo, born in New York City, finished his high school career at Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Academy before a postgraduate year at Brewster Academy. From there, Diallo spent four seasons at Providence where he earned second-team All-Big East honors as a junior and senior.

After going undrafted, Diallo started his professional career with Greek club Lavrio. A year later, he was off to France to join AS Monaco. The 6-foot-7 forward won last year’s EuroLeague Defensive Player of the Year award. He averaged 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game in the continental competition.

The signing continues the offseason emphasis on adding defensive help to the roster. With Diallo on board, the Nuggets have 12 of 15 standard roster spots occupied. That doesn’t count restricted free agents Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones or Bryce Hopkins, who Denver drafted with the 49th overall pick in last month’s draft.
