Bodycam footage shows Denver police shoot man who charged officer with knife
Denver police on Tuesday released footage showing an officer opening fire on a man charging him with a knife.
Denver police responded at about noon July 5 to an area near East 50th Avenue and Washington Street after callers reported a man was harassing people at a residence. Officers found the man, who was carrying a knife, and ordered him to drop the weapon, police said.
At a news conference, Denver police Lt. Rich Laber said the man, identified as Wilson Guerra-Bravo, 26, had repeatedly gone to the residence and harassed the people living there. Laber said police had previously responded to calls involving the same individual.
In the footage, officers can be seen attempting to contact Guerra-Bravo, who is walking away from police. The officer radios dispatch to say the man appears to be armed with a knife before the suspect begins running, prompting a foot chase.
After catching up with him, Guerra-Bravo appears to move toward the officer before moving away. The officer then orders Guerra-Bravo to drop the knife and warns him that he will be shot before telling his radio that the man lunged at him with the knife.
Guerra-Bravo continues to walk away as the officer follows him and commands him to drop the knife. He begins to cross the street before turning and running toward the officer, who continues issuing commands to drop the knife and warns the man that he will be shot.
As Guerra-Bravo gets close to the officer, the officer opens fire. Six shots can be heard as the suspect falls to the ground and begins crying out in pain. The officer continues commanding him to drop the knife as more police arrive on scene.
A responding officer tells the officer who fired the shots to put his gun away as they move to place the man in handcuffs before the video ends. Officers recovered a 10-inch kitchen knife from the scene, Laber said.
Laber said Denver Health paramedics and the Denver Fire Department responded to the scene to perform medical care and transport Guerra-Bravo to the hospital, where he remained as of Tuesday. Guerra-Bravo faces a charge of attempted homicide, Laber said.
The officer involved in the shooting was not named by police, but Laber said he has been with Denver police since 2024 and has not been involved in any prior incidents. The officer does not have previous law enforcement experience beyond DPD.
The officer has been placed in a non-line assignment while the incident is under investigation.
Laber said the incident is being investigated by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Colorado State Patrol, DPD’s homicide unit and the Denver District Attorney’s office. The Office of the Independent Monitor is also monitoring the investigation.
