“Feel like you’re away from everything”: Hidden Front Range canyonland opens to public

The Town of Castle Rock has officially opened the long-awaited Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space, as of Monday, July 13.

The town describes the 681-acre property as “one of the region’s most spectacular landscapes,” complete with 10 miles of trails that travel through rolling grasslands, hoodoo rock formations, mature forests, and dramatic canyon cliffs, also with a connection to Castlewood Canyon State Park. An additional five miles of trails are also planned, too.

“There’s the geologic features, the wildlife, the different forest types, the mesa, the valley floor,” said Assistant Parks Director Jeff Smullen in prior reporting from The Gazette’s Seth Boster. “There are so many unique aspects of the property. You could just spend hours out there and feel like you’re away from everything.”

While many of the Front Range’s outdoor recreation options are found west of I-25, Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space is found on its eastern side, near Castle Rock’s Matney Park.

Summer hours are 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., with it important to note that trails are limited to only hikers. Dogs, horses, and other pets are not allowed on the property, with bikes permitted only on roadways as a means of protecting sensitive natural resources and wildlife habitat.
