Three of 20 largest fires in Colorado history currently burning as Aspen Acres blaze passes 100K acres

While growth of the Aspen Acres fire has slowed significantly and containment has increased to 48 percent in recent days, the blaze has officially reached 100,223 acres following a slow climb in size this week. This makes it the first wildfire to grow to six-figures of acreage in 2026.

The Aspen Acres fire currently ranks as the seventh-largest wildfire in state history, closing in on sixth-largest Spring Creek fire, which burned 108,045 acres in 2018. Of the seven fires in state history that have hit 100,000 acres or more, six have occurred since 2018. The largest fire in state history remains the Cameron Peak fire, which burned 208,912 acres in 2020.

Also noteworthy is that the ongoing Ferris fire that’s burning near Dolores has reached 64,881 acres, becoming the 10th-largest fire in Colorado state history, currently with 59 percent containment. Meanwhile, the Gold Mountain fire near Ouray ranks as the 19th-largest fire in state history, last reported at 37,734 acres with 13 percent containment.
