Elephant in the room: Who replaces John Franklin-Myers?

The biggest loss in free agency entering 2026 was defensive end John Franklin-Myers signing a three-year, $63 million contract with the Titans. He accounted for 65 tackles and 14.5 sacks over two previous seasons in Denver. The Broncos let him walk after signing Allen, Roach and D.J. Jones to multiyear contract extensions. How will the Broncos replace JFM?

It’s possible that Roach moves from defensive tackle to defensive end. He’s logged 6.5 sacks over the past two years as the primary backup to D.J. Jones. Uwazurike is a strong candidate for increased playing time after 3.5 sacks last season. Don’t be surprised if Sai’vion Jones earns a bigger role in his second NFL season.

It is most likely that one player does not fill the very large shoes left by JFM. The Broncos will rely on multiple players to step up until one defensive lineman separates himself from the pack. The defensive line has enough quality depth to allow the process to play out through training camp and into the regular season.

Biggest competition: Onyedim
vs. returning depth

The Broncos used a third-round draft pick to select Onyedim out of Texas A&M. His stock rose after a standout senior season with 48 tackles (8.5 for loss) with 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Onyedim flashed elite physicality defending the run and disrupting pass attempts. How will that translate to the NFL?

The Broncos should remain patient in his development. Onyedim joins a deep and talented defensive line unit. Training camp will be the first test to help determine his NFL readiness as a rookie. But there is no rush to put him on the field if he isn’t ready yet.

Bottom line

Defensive line is among the biggest positions of strength on the roster. Allen is well established as one of the best at his position in the NFL. Losing John Franklin-Myers will not be considered a major blow if young players on the roster continue to improve.
