Broncos talk: With rookies reporting Wednesday, who will be the first-year player to watch when training camp gets underway next week?

Chris Tomasson, Broncos reporter: Jonah Coleman. Some have called the Broncos getting the running back in the fourth round of the draft a steal, and he can look to prove that will turn out to be the case. The former University of Washington star will battle second-year man RJ Harvey to be the primary backup behind J.K. Dobbins. After Dobbins was lost with a foot injury in Week 10 last season, the Broncos’ running attack sputtered, leading them to look to beef up their depth.

Kyle Fredrickson, Broncos reporter: Coleman has ‘play of the day’ potential in spades. One highlight run and Broncos Country will crown him future RB1. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Don’t forget about defensive lineman Tyler Onyedim, either. He could rise on the depth chart after John Franklin-Myers left in free agency. Onyedim is the team’s highest-drafted player (No. 66, third round) but will face stiff competition in a deep position group. He needs a strong camp. Do you have a possibly under-the-radar rookie to watch?

Tomasson: I do agree Onyedim is the only rookie who seemingly could contend for a starting position, but defensive linemen often don’t develop as fast as running backs. It’s very common for rookie running backs to make an impact. As for an under-the-radar guy, I’m going with inside linebacker Taurean York, signed as a college free agent. After a stellar career at Texas A&M, he called it “almost unbelievable” he wasn’t drafted. York has the ability and the work ethic to move ahead of several other young players to become the top reserve at the position.

Fredrickson: The Broncos have signed an undrafted rookie in 21 of the past 22 seasons. York is a smart pick to be next in line. I think outside linebacker Dasan McCullough is another candidate after the Broncos did not draft an edge rusher in this class. There is also uncertainty over OLB Jonathon Cooper’s status after being excused from minicamp. McCullough has elite size at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds. He was a freshman All-American at Indiana (2022) before transferring to Oklahoma and Nebraska. McCullough is another rookie to watch in training camp.
