A bear was hit and killed by a vehicle Wednesday morning in Lone Tree, authorities said.

The crash happened near Northbound Yosemite Street at Heritage Hills Parkway during the morning commute, according to the City of Lone Tree. The bear moved to the tree line on the east side of the roadway following the crash.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife responded and tranquilized the bear in order to assess its injuries, but the bear later died of internal injuries sustained in the crash.

No details were available on whether anyone in the vehicle was injured.

All roads in the area have since reopened.
