Nik Bonitto wants to disrupt quarterbacks and feed his local community.

The Bonitto Family Foundation has partnered with Food Bank of the Rockies and Safeway to launch a “checkout fundraiser benefiting food pantries and backpack programs” which provides kids with food on weekends when school meals are unavailable.

The Broncos outside linebacker joined Overland High School students on Thursday at a Denver Safeway (2150 S. Downing St.) store for grocery-inspired games to launch the checkout fundraiser now available statewide at Safeway and Albertsons stores through Aug. 11.

“With school starting up and stuff, just making sure these kids have food,” Bonitto said. “Being able to eat at lunch, things like that and after (school) care. Just supporting them in that way. Being able to make sure that families are fed.”

Meanwhile, Bonitto has feasted on NFL quarterbacks over back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons with 27.5 sacks over the last two years. Bonitto spent much of his offseason studying tape from the league’s best edge rushers to learn how to deal with increasing double teams and chip blocks. He finished last season with six sacks over his final 11 games.

Bonitto did log a sack and two forced fumbles in the AFC divisional round playoff win over the Bills. He told reporters he wants to improve in “all facets” this upcoming season.

“It’s obviously great when you can do it in the regular season,” Bonitto said. “But doing it in the postseason in those big types of moments, it gives you that confidence to know that you’re supposed to be there and you can make those types of plays on big stages.”

It is possible that Bonitto will have a different starting outside linebacker across from him in 2026. The Broncos excused Jonathon Cooper from minicamp following domestic violence charges. Cooper has pleaded not guilty and has a hearing scheduled on Friday.

Cooper’s potential absence would give a stable of young Broncos edge rushers — including Jonah Elliss, Que Robinson, Drew Sanders and Dondrea Tillman — more opportunities this season.

“We shouldn’t be surprised with any of them. They’re all great players. Each one of them, whenever they’ve had their opportunity to go out and make plays, they’ve done it,” Bonitto said. “You’ve seen it with Jonah for two years, being able to do what he does. Till is reliable as ever in the run and the pass game. Que, in his limited opportunities last year, he really flashed on tape as well. Even a lot of the younger guys. Johnny Walker. … Drew Sanders. He’s been injured, but he’s playing well when he gets his opportunities.

“We have a really good room. All of them are going to be ready whenever they get their chance.”

Broncos veterans report to training camp on Tuesday. Bonitto said that “everybody is chomping at the bit to get the pad on” after going 14-3 last season. He draws even more confidence with the return of defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, a head coaching candidate and the majority of his talented unit from a year ago.

“We’ve kind of had the same core group for quite a while now since coach (Sean) Payton has gotten here,” Bonitto said. “Each year that we continue to build off it, bring these guys back and continue to build off the stuff that we’ve been doing for the last couple of years. It’s only going to continue to get better for us.”
