Happy birthday, Colorado — and Colorado sports.

Leading into the state’s 150th birthday Aug. 1, The Denver Gazette has partnered with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame to publicize the definitive list of Colorado’s top 150 sports moments.

For Nos. 50 to 1, Colorado Sports Hall of Fame historian Dave Plati coordinated a 19-member committee to rank in order what they considered the top moments. The No. 1 moment will be revealed July 31. Plati and Broncos icon Jim Saccomano will unveil the list weekly on a Colorado Sports Hall of Fame podcast at coloradosports.org/podcast/.

No. 7 — Sept. 18-Oct. 15, 2007

In what became known as “Rocktober,” the Rockies won 21 of 22 games to reach the World Series. It began with a two-run, walk-off home run by Todd Helton that beat the Dodgers, 9-8. That started an 11-game winning streak with 13 wins in the last 14 regular-season games that enabled Colorado to catch San Diego for second place in the NL West, forcing a one-game playoff on Oct. 1. That game went 13 innings and the Rockies defeated the Padres, 9-8. A run-scoring double by Troy Tulowitzki and an RBI triple by Matt Holliday tied the score. Jamie Carroll then hit a fly ball to right, with Holliday racing home to beat the tag, giving the Rockies the win and a berth in the playoffs. Colorado swept Philadelphia in the Division Series and Arizona in the League Championship Series.
