Denver cold front could mean breaking September records for heat and snow

After weeks of record-breaking heat, a cold front hit Denver Tuesday resulting in drastic temperature shifts and snowfall.

Rain and snow showers began in Denver Monday night and lasted into Tuesday morning, but Monday’s over-90-degree heat prevented any snow accumulation. Temperatures sat at 35 degrees during the day and will decrease to as low as 26 degrees Tuesday night.

Snow is predicted through Tuesday night and precipitation remains likely until Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for Denver from Tuesday at 6 p.m. to Wednesday at noon.

This weather is in sharp contrast to September’s hot start.

At 101 degrees at Denver International Airport, Saturday broke three heat records: A record high temperature for Sept. 5, the monthly record high temperature for September and Denver’s latest 100-degree day in the last 146 years of record keeping.

Sunday tied the 2013 Sept. 6 record high temperature, reaching 97 degrees at DIA.

Monday marked Denver’s 73rd day this year with temperatures reaching 90 degrees or higher, tying the 2012 record for most days over 90 degrees on record.

Monday also brought the highest temperature ever observed in Colorado in September, with La Junta hitting 108 degrees in the afternoon.

Tuesday and Wednesday’s snowfall also has the potential to set records.

In Denver, snowfall has not been measured in any September since 2000. For the city to officially measure snowfall, at least 0.1 inches of snow would need to be measured at DIA.

The last time September snowfall totaled more than one inch in Denver was in 1999.

However, despite the dramatic change in temperature from Monday to Tuesday, Denver missed the list of two-day temperature changes. There must be at least a 66-degree change to make the cut while Denver sat at around a 60-degree change.

The weather is predicted to return to mostly sunny on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to steadily increase each day, returning to over 80 degrees by Sunday.
