Pair arrested in string of trailhead break-ins in Colorado

Jared Balderston, 29, and Misty Winston, 38, have been arrested in connection with a home burglary and a string of car break-ins at local trailheads in Mesa County.

According to Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, the thieves were able to obtain valuables by smashing out car windows among several local trailheads. Deputies and investigators were able to identify and arrest the two thieves by tracking down stolen credit card purchases, surveillance video, and pawn records.

Charges for both include theft of $5,000-$20,000, 2 counts of 1st-degree criminal trespass of auto, criminal mischief resulting in fines of $750 or more, 1st-degree burglary, false information pawn slip, unauthorized use of financial transaction device, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Currently, both suspects are being held in the Mesa County Detention Facility.

Avoid trailhead theft. There’s nothing more disappointing than stepping off the trail from a beautiful hike in nature to discover that your car has been broken into. Whether you’re hiking or not, the number one thing to remember is to never leave any valuables visible inside your car. This includes hiking gear, spare change, wallets, coolers, cameras, and other electronic equipment. Lock up, remove valuables, and soak in the scenery without worry.
