Colorado state park could see earlier closing date this winter

Spinney Mountain State Park may close earlier this season due to a strong wintry blast of October snow.

The official closing date for Spinney Mountain State Park is set for November 15, 2019, at about 5:20 p.m., depending on ice. The park will reopen in the spring of 2020 when the reservoir is ice-free.

While nearby Eleven Mile will close for the season to boaters on November 1, 2019, the park will remain open for winter camping and ice fishing. Non-motorized vessels will be allowed to launch until ice-over. Electric trolling motors are not permitted after November 1, 2019.

If you’re planning on ice fishing this winter, always wear a life jacket and take a friend. Plan to bring ice picks and at least 50 feet of rope. Test holes should also be drilled to ensure at least four inches of solid ice across the surfaces. Stay clear from pressure ridges, open water, and ice that appears porous, soft, or has granulated crystals. For more information on ice fishing in Colorado, please visit www.cpw.state.co.us.

Please be aware that Independence Pass, Trail Ridge Road, and Mount Evans Scenic Byway are all closed for the winter season.
