Passenger vehicle tire chains required under new law
milehightraveler
Colorado is cracking down on travel along snowy roads.
Anyone traveling around Colorado needs to be aware of when Passenger Vehicle Traction and Chain Laws are being implemented by CDOT. State law requires a minimum tire tread for all vehicles on any roads to be 3/16 of an inch. If your tires do not meet these requirements, you can install chains or an alternative traction device (AutoSock).
According to FOX31, checkpoints may also be implemented at Morrison and Dotsero, where the passenger law takes effect for drivers headed into the mountains.
Under a Traction Law, all passenger vehicles must have either snow tires, mud/snow tires or a four-wheel-drive vehicle. A Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, the final safety measure before the highway is closed, requires every vehicle on the road to have chains or an alternative traction device. If you fail to comply, you could be fined more than $130 and more than $650 for blocking any lanes.
If you are traveling to Colorado or through Colorado you need to know about this law! In 2019, Colorado House Bill 19-1207 updated the laws in regard to traction devices and tire requirements in Colorado. The video provides an explanation of the updated law and how it impacts drivers in the state.

Colorado’s New Traction Law will be in effect on I-70 from Morrison at mile marker 259 to Dotsero at mile marker 133 from September 1st to May 31.
Commercial vehicles with a gross combined weight rating of 26,001 lbs or more are required to have 4 or more drive wheels covered with an appropriate traction device (Buses must chain two drive wheels to comply). Vehicles with less than 4 drive wheels must have all drive wheels covered with an appropriate traction device. If you fail to comply, you could be fined $500.00, plus a $79.00 surcharge. If blocking any portion of the road, the fine jumps up to $1,000.00, plus a $157.00 surcharge.

Snow falling in the mountains is beautiful, but it can also be very slippery and treacherous out on the roads and often results in chaos. Start the frosty season off right by making sure your vehicle is ready for driving safely in the mountains.
For alerts on active Traction Laws or Chain Laws, pay close attention to highway signage or visit CDOT.
