3-foot deep snow closes Trail Ridge Road in Colorado

Winter weather has hit the Rocky Mountain National Park area, closing Trail Ridge Road above 9,700 feet due to adverse conditions. The closure will remain in place throughout the weekend, at the least.

According to an official press release from the park, snowplow operators are encountering snow drifts that are more than 3 feet deep on the road.

The specific spot of the closure is at Rainbow Curve on the east side and Colorado River Trailhead on the west side.

Trail Ridge Road typically closes for the season on October 23. With additional snowstorms set to hit Colorado this weekend, the through-drive of the road may stay closed until spring. Generally, the road reopens on Memorial Day Weekend.

Trail Ridge Road reaches a maximum altitude of 12,183 feet above sea level. It’s 48 miles long, with 11 of those miles traveling through terrain above treeline.
