Moose spotted taking a dip in Colorado alpine lake

Two moose were caught on video swimming across an alpine lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness over the weekend.

While the unusual wildlife sightings are gaining a lot of attention online, moose actually love to swim. It helps regulate their body temperature, especially on hot summer days. Standing in just a couple feet of water also helps deter predators, including wolves and mountain lions from attacking.

Moose are capable of swimming up 6 miles per hour for up two hours at a time. Thanks to their extremely long legs, they are able to easily navigate through deep waters and snow.

The Indian Peak Wilderness is a 73,711-acre wilderness area located in north-central Colorado, just west of Denver. Here’s a look at where it’s located on the map.

Colorado offers plenty of opportunities for watching wildlife. Just remember, always keep your distance. Never approach a moose or any other wild animal. Weighing up to 1600 pounds and charging at speeds of 35 mph, an angry moose is no match for a hiker. If a moose attacks you, run. If possible, try to place a large object like a tree or rock between you the moose. In any situation, do your best not to disturb them. Respect wildlife and stay safe out there.
