If you’re looking for free camping spots near Denver, check out these dispersed camping areas. Remember, dispersed, free camping often means no amenities. Be prepared and practice Leave No Trace Principals. This means packing out all waste and leaving the wilderness better than you found it. As always, check with the local ranger station prior to departing for the hills for any fire bans in your area.

1. Our Favorite Camping Spots Near Denver Buffalo Creek

Located along Forest Road 550, there are plenty of dispersed campsites perfect for a quick getaway from Denver. Buffalo Creek has a plethora of mountain biking and hiking trails, as well as access to the famous Colorado Trail.

2. Free Camping Near Blackhawk along Bald Mountain Lane

These camping spots near Denver also have the added benefit of being near Black Hawk and Central City. If you’re looking for a fun night in Colorado’s only casino area, but still want to camp, this place is perfect for you.

3. Four Wheel to Bill More Lake and Empire Loop in Empire, Colorado

These dispersed sites are located in the high alpine off of Forest Service Road 183.1 where high clearance is recommended. The road in is rocky and bumpy, but it’s a real treat once you reach the lake. Be sure to check with the Forest Service for allowable camping in the area.

4. Romp Your Jeep up Kingston Peak Near Idaho Springs

Another one of our favorite camping spots near Denver, Kingston Peak has some excellent dispersed camping for the intrepid driver. Again, you’ll want a high clearance vehicle to reach this awesome camper’s paradise.

5. Hiker’s Paradise along Guanella Pass

There are several popular camping spots near Denver along Guanella Pass, the road leaving Georgetown and connecting Interstate 70 with Highway 285. The countless hiking trails along the pass make this an ideal location for those looking to explore the area by foot. Do understand that this road marks the split between the Arapaho National Forest and Pike National Forest. Be sure to look at a map for each of the national forests to determine camping regulations, which are different for each.
