Lory State Park offers variety of activities for all visitors

A look at Lory State Park near Fort Collins:

Description: This 2,590-acre playground in the northern Front Range has something for everyone. About 26 miles of trail braid through pine forests, rock-walled gullies and grassy glades. There’s also an equestrian course.

Activities: Hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, camping, fishing and power boating at nearby Horsetooth Reservoir, geocaching, cross-country skiing/snowshoeing, limited hunting.

Wildlife: Mule deer, coyote, red fox, bear, bobcat, elk and mountain lion; various larks, raptors and waterfowl, conspicuous birds include canyon wren, yellow-breasted chat.

Fun fact: The park is named for Charles A. Lory, among the early settlers who came for agricultural interests. In 1909 he became president of Colorado Agricultural College, now Colorado State University.

Directions: On Interstate 25, take exit 271 for Mountain Vista Drive. Continue 2 miles and turn right onto Turnberry Road. In less than a mile, turn left onto Country Club Road. Follow for about 2 miles to Colorado 1, catching U.S. 287 after .3 miles. Follow to fork, staying left onto Rist Canyon Road. After a mile, take left onto County Road 23 north and follow for 1.4 miles, heading right onto County Road 25G. Travel 1.6 miles to Lodgepole Drive.
