Last Tuesday, a 26-year-old student at University of Colorado Boulder was severely injured while skiing at Eldora Mountain Resort. The skier collided with a tree near the end of the ski day ( estimated at 3:45 PM) and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The injured party was later identified as Bill Brockmueller in a series of follow-up posts that have been published on CaringBridge.org.

In the first post, a journal entry by Emily Crider, Bill’s injuries were outlined as a head injury, a fractured sternum, a fractured right leg, and a fractured T5 vertebrae. Bill’s head injury was causing swelling of the brain, and as a result, Bill was put in a medically induced coma and had part of his skull cut away to relieve excess pressure.

On December 9, another update was made announcing that Bill’s family had made the difficult decision to take him off of life support, with the exception of a ventilator and “maintenance IV fluids.” In the same update, it’s mentioned that Bill has not been declared braindead. This is said to be due to his ability to breath on his own without the ventilator.
