Rainbow Lakes Campground is a popular first-come, first-serve campground with 18 campsites in Roosevelt National Forest near Nederland. The campground is primitive; there are vault toilets, but there is no drinking water, electricity, hook-ups, dump stations, or showers. The reason it is so popular, and worth a visit, is its proximity to the Rainbow Lakes. The Rainbow Lakes are a series of nine small ponds, marshland, and dense forests an easy hike of about a mile from the campground. The lakes are well stocked with rainbow trout and make for a scenic day of fishing. The Arapaho Glacier Trail, also stemming from the campground, takes hikers high above treeline to the Arapaho peaks. Rainbow Lakes Campground serves as an excellent home base for fishing, backpacking, or a peaceful day by the lake.
