Eliza Fletcher autopsy reveals cause of death for billionaire heiress and mother

Heiress billionaire and mother of two Eliza Fletcher, who was kidnapped during an early morning run, died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the recently released autopsy report.

Fletcher, who went missing and was found dead in early September, had a gunshot wound in the back of her head and blunt-force injuries to her right leg, according to the autopsy report by the West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center in Memphis. Her body also had traces of fentanyl, according to toxicology reports obtained by CBS affiliate WREG-TV, although it’s unclear how long the drug was in her body.

TIMELINE: WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE ELIZA FLETCHER MURDER

The autopsy determined Fletcher had died “with a single gunshot to the head” and that she also had jaw fractures, according to the report. It’s not clear if Fletcher had been sexually assaulted before her death.

Fletcher set out on an early morning run around 4 a.m. on Sept. 2 on her typical route around the University of Memphis. She was running along Central Avenue, just a few miles away from her home, according to authorities.

While on her run, Fletcher was ambushed and forced into a dark-colored GMC Terrain by a man who was seen in surveillance footage waiting on the route for her to pass by. There was a struggle between the two, and Fletcher was forced into the passenger side of the car, according to police. The GMC Terrain was then seen in surveillance footage sitting in a nearby parking lot for four minutes with Fletcher inside the vehicle before it drove off.

Nearly four hours after Fletcher left on her morning run, her husband called the Memphis Police Department to report her missing. Memphis officials issued a citywide watch for Fletcher, with local news outlets beginning to pick up the story. Law enforcement agencies joined the investigation, including the FBI and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

After an overnight search, officials with the U.S. Marshals located the SUV, identified as a GMC Terrain, linked to Fletcher’s abduction in a parking lot near the house of Cleotha Abston, who was deemed a person of interest in the investigation. Officials then spotted Abston, who attempted to flee, and apprehended him, they said.

Police arrested Abston on Sept. 4, one day before Fletcher’s body was found, on initial charges of aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence, officials said. Abston then appeared before a judge for the second time on Sept. 6 to hear updated charges that included first-degree murder and first-degree murder in perpetration of kidnapping.

The judge revoked bond for Abston’s kidnapping and murder charges, announcing the court would hold him without bail. Abston has not yet entered a plea in the case.
