Denver Broncos met with Douglas County commissioners on stadium

A new NFL stadium in Douglas County isn’t out of the picture.

Denver Broncos officials met with Douglas County officials on Aug. 6 to discuss the potential for a new stadium, particularly in Lone Tree, according to Douglas County and team officials.

“The Denver Broncos are more than a football team, they are a cultural symbol for the entire Rocky Mountain region,” Douglas County Commissioner Abe Laydon told The Denver Gazette.

“Locating in Douglas County would place them just minutes from Dove Valley and Centennial Airport, with unmatched access, infrastructure, and convenience for players, fans and executives alike,” he said.

Douglas County is located over 20 miles south of where Empower Field at Mile High Stadium is.

Most recently, Denver Broncos officials expressed interest in building a stadium in Denver. Burnham Yard, a 58-acre, crescent-shaped area about a mile from Empower Field, was dubbed a possibility.

Lone Tree officials, however, have expressed interest in becoming the new home for NFL football in one of its future developments.

“Over the past year, our conversations with the Denver Broncos and Lone Tree have been exploratory and constructive,” Melissa Gallegos, a spokesperson for Lone Tree, said in a statement.

Previously, the city pointed to land approved in 2018 to support a 440-acre development at the southeast corner of Interstate 25 and Lincoln Avenue — the Lone Tree City Center.

“The team’s vision — an activated, year‑round destination integrated with transit, walkable streets, and first‑class mobility — aligns with the long‑standing plan for the Lone Tree City Center,” Gallegos’ statement said.

The City Center plan predates the Broncos expressing interest in moving out of Empower Field, where its lease ends following the 2030 season.

“It’s really about encouraging our City Center, that’s the focus, whether that’s the Broncos or another possibility,” Gallegos told The Denver Gazette on Thursday. “The story is whether it’s the Broncos or not.”

Officials didn’t specify exactly what was discussed during meetings.

Patrick Smyth, a spokesperson for the Broncos, said conversations with Douglas County and Lone Tree were “productive.”

He told The Denver Gazette that Broncos President Damani Leech and organizational leaders met with Douglas County and Lone Tree officials.

“The Broncos deserve the very best,” Laydon said. “And in Douglas County, that’s exactly what they will find.”

In Lone Tree, officials remain open to all options.

“We are always open to ideas that support the vision of the Lone Tree City Center as a destination urban center, first envisioned when voters annexed the area into Lone Tree,” Gallegos previously said.

Coventry Development Corp. owns the RidgeGate land and oversees its plot east of I-25, where the Lone Tree City Center is planned. A Coventry spokesperson previously said the developer can’t comment on the idea of an NFL stadium in its community.

“The city and the property owner have worked for decades to ready the site for regional destination development, including transit investments into the heart of the City Center,” Gallegos said.

For the Broncos, as the new football season approaches, it’s also about considering all options.

“We appreciate these ongoing discussions and continue to carefully evaluate all options pertaining to the future of our stadium,” Smyth said.
