Tax rebate check update: Direct one-time payment worth $250 to be sent out beginning today

A one-time tax rebate is set to be sent to residents of Virginia as soon as today, with millions of payments set to be delivered this week.

The tax rebate was passed earlier this year as a part of a bipartisan measure passed by the state house and the state senate.

ONE UNDERAPPRECIATED ECONOMIC INDICATOR IS DEEPLY NEGATIVE

The rebates will give taxpayers in the commonwealth with tax liabilities up to $250 for individual filers and up to $500 for joint filers. “Tax liability is the amount of tax you owe throughout the year minus any credits, deductions, or subtractions,” according to the state.

The state said filers must turn in their 2021 taxes by Nov. 1 in order to receive the rebate. The rebates are being issued in the order in which taxpayers filed their returns.

The nearly 3.2 million rebates are set to be sent out by the end of the year via direct deposit and paper checks.

State Tax Commissioner Craig Burns told the House of Delegates last week about a soft launch of the rebates, which was conducted on Friday and Saturday of last week.

“A few thousand direct deposits, a few thousand checks, just to make sure everything works before we go live,” Burns said.

Residents can use a tool on the state’s website to determine if they are eligible for the special tax rebate.
