Pennsylvania town to witness Trump and Biden visits during same week

A small city in Pennsylvania will host both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump this week, a mere five days apart.

Biden’s visit to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is scheduled for Tuesday to make up for a visit that was canceled last month due to the president getting COVID-19. Biden will deliver remarks on public safety and reducing gun violence during an event at Wilkes University, according to the White House event schedule.

BIDEN TO DELIVER MIDTERM ELECTION PRIME-TIME ADDRESS THURSDAY

Trump is expected to follow over the weekend as he hosts his first midterm rally on Saturday at an arena a few miles away, according to Axios. Trump’s appearance is to highlight the three Republican candidates who are running for Senate, governor, and a House seat in the district. The GOP candidates include Doug Mastriano for governor, Dr. Mehmet Oz for Senate, and Jim Bognet for the House.

Bognet, who previously worked for the Trump administration as an appointee to the U.S. Export-Import Bank, is the only Pennsylvania congressional hopeful to have secured an endorsement from Trump.

“I was proud to work for President Trump in his administration to advance the ‘America First’ agenda,” Bognet told Axios. “I’m the only challenger in Pennsylvania endorsed by President Trump, and I’m excited President Trump is having a huge rally in my district this Saturday.”

Trump received the most votes in Luzerne County, where Wilkes-Barre is located, during the 2020 election. The county, which voted for former President Barack Obama in 2012, switched parties in 2020, with 57% of the county voting for Trump over Biden.

Biden’s visit is just one of three appearances in the state in the next two weeks. Biden is expected to return to the state on Thursday for a speech at Independence Hall in Philadelphia and then has another visit to Pittsburgh next week for a Labor Day parade. The visits come three months ahead of the midterm elections.
