Avalanche prepare for unique doubleheader at Magness Arena and Ball Arena on Sunday

Let’s play two.

The Avalanche and Utah Mammoth decided to knock out both of their preseason matchups on Sunday in the span of 8 hours. Game one will take place at Magness Arena at 2:30 p.m., while the nightcap starts at 6:30 p.m. over at Ball Arena.

With two games in one day, Avalanche fans who make the trek to both will be treated to quite a few veterans playing their first preseason games of the year.

But not all.

Nathan MacKinnon, Ross Colton, Joel Kiviranta and Scott Wedgewood are a few of the veterans who will get the weekend off. The debut of Brent Burns in an Avalanche uniform is also temporarily on hold, as the veteran defenseman didn’t skate on Saturday and will be held out this weekend.

“He’s doing OK,” Jared Bednar said Saturday. “He just had a little tweak there (Friday). I don’t think it’s anything serious. We’re just getting started, so no use risking anything.”

Burns is currently the NHL’s Iron man, having suited up for 925 straight regular season games. It would be just Colorado’s luck if he got dinged up as soon he got to town. Gabriel Landeskog, who also did not skate on Saturday, is expected to play in the early game at DU. As Bednar did not mention them as being scratches, look for key players like Cale Makar, Devon Toews and Martin Necas to suit up for one of the games on Sunday as well.

While two games in one day is a logistical nightmare for the equipment staff of the Avalanche, it’s not too bad on the coaching staff.

“It’s easy,” Bednar said on Friday. “It’s the same plan, right? We’re all going through our systems from square-one on up.”

Bednar, Dave Hakstol and Eagles assistant coach Tim Branham will be on the bench at DU. Then they’ll head to Ball Arena and watch the second game from the stands. Avalanche assistant Nolan Pratt will run the bench for the second game with the help of Eagles head coach Mark Letestu and assistant Derek Army.

With two games in one day and a day off Monday, expect the Avalanche to cut down their roster a bit before they practice again on Tuesday.
