Alex Honnold set to climb 101-floor skyscraper without ropes in upcoming Netflix special

By now, Alex Honnold is essentially a household name – especially in Colorado, where it’s no secret there’s a vibrant rock climbing community. Perhaps best known for climbing the 2,900-foot Freerider route up El Capitan without safety gear in 2017, the 40-year-old has maintained his status as one of the most recognized athletes in the world of outdoor recreation for close to a decade.
In partnership with Netflix, Honnold is looking ahead to his next major feat – scaling Taipei 101 without ropes or a harness. The kicker – the effort will be broadcast live in a two-hour Netflix special aptly called ‘Skyscraper Live.’
Taipei 101 rises 1,667 feet as the 11th-tallest building in the world and the tallest building in Taiwan. It’s named Taipei 101 thanks to its 101 floors.
The special is set to premiere in early 2026, though the specific date hasn’t been announced quite yet. It will be available for viewing by Netflix subscribers.
In the past, French climber Alain Robert made headlines when he climbed Taipei 101 with ropes in 2004. The ascent took him almost four hours, nearly twice as long as expected. Wind and rain were present on the day of his climb.
