Denver City Council agenda: $20M for shelters, $1.5M police settlement

On Tuesday, the Denver City Council will consider close to $19 million in funding across six resolutions tied to the city’s homeless shelter operations and an additional $1.4 million in associated transportation services.

If approved, Council Resolutions 25-1373 and 25-1374 would add $10.3 million to existing agreements with The Denver Rescue Mission to provide programmatic services and operate two low-barrier shelters in District 8 and in District 4.

The remaining three resolutions propose adding a total $8.6 million for low-barrier shelter services and operations to current agreements with the Catholic Charities and Community Services of the Archdiocese of Denver.

Additionally, the city council will consider two resolutions to provide daily bus transportation to and from city shelters.

Elsewhere on the agenda are two police liability settlements for $1.2 million and $300,000 related to the case captioned Jazmine Bjelland, et al. v. City and County of Denver. The case, filed in the U.S. District Court of Colorado, alleges members of the Denver Police Department used excessive force and violated the First Amendment rights of peaceful demonstrators during the 2020 George Floyd protests.

There will be three proclamations presented.

The first, which will be presented in the 3:30 p.m. session, will honor FBI Special Agents Roy Moore and Donald Sebesta.

In the 5:30 p.m. session, two proclamations will be issued: 25-1535, which celebrates the Denver Cafecito, and 25-1534, honoring organizations in Denver that contribute to the advocacy and empowerment of the Hispanic, Latino/a/x, and Chicano/a community.

There are no scheduled public hearings.

The Denver City Council will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., with the general public comment session scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Due to the city’s observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, the regular city council meeting was moved to Tuesday.

The city council will resume its regular schedule next week.
