3 dead, including 9-year-old, in weekend I-70 Summit County truck crash

A rollover semi truck crash along Interstate 70 on Sunday morning resulted in the death of two adults and a 9-year-old girl, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

CSP officials said the crash occurred around 5:42 a.m. west of the Eisenhower Tunnel near Silverthorne. The crash, which took place at westbound milepost 208, closed the 1.7-mile long tunnel, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Authorities said the investigation revealed a Freightliner Cascadia semi was traveling westbound on a downhill straightway, before losing control and traveling off to the right side of the road. The Freightliner then veered to the center concrete barrier before rolling across the road and blocking lanes. During which, the Freightliner caught fire, according to CSP.

All occupants of the semi died on-scene, troopers said.

The driver of the Freightliner is identified as a 37-year-old woman from Deming, NM. The passenger was found to be a 39-year-old man from Deming. A 9-year-old girl from Jacksonville, FL died in the crash, according to authorities.

CSP asks anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the agency at (970) 249-4392 with reference number VC250372.
