Horror movie set in Colorado with 85% RT score tops North American box office

In case you haven’t heard, the sequel to 2021’s highly-rated ‘The Black Phone‘ horror movie that’s set in ‘North Denver’ has been deemed a hit, with the much-talked-about ‘Black Phone 2‘ mostly set in Colorado’s high-country.

For readers who might have missed the first movie, ‘The Black Phone,’ the plot of this thriller covers the tale of a serial child abductor and murderer that’s terrifying the Mile High City area in 1978. Years after it debuted, it maintains a high 81% and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes’ critic score and audience score, respectively.

The highly-anticipated sequel to this movie, dubbed ‘Black Phone 2,’ was released on October 17, soaring to the top of box office charts and pulling in an estimated $42 million worldwide during its opening weekend compared to its estimated budget of $30. Those in the Centennial State may be particularly interested in checking this one out, as much of the film is set in Colorado’s high country.

More specifically, a key location in the movie is the fictional ‘Alpine Lake Youth Camp’ – believed to be based on Summit County. Don’t be fooled though, the movie was actually filmed in Ontario. Black Phone 2 takes place four years after the events of the first movie.

When it comes to the inspiration behind the wintery Alpine Lake Youth Camp, director Scott Derrickson reportedly drew from his experiences of skiing in the Rocky Mountains during his youth, as well as school camp-set horror films like Friday the 13th and Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of The Shining.

Black Phone 2 hasn’t been out long, but its already getting some good ratings from viewers. It’s got a 75% for its Rotten Tomatoes ‘critic score’ and an 85% for its ‘fan score,’ at time of publishing.

Sure to be a great watch during Halloween-time, Black Phone 2 is likely showing at a theater near you.
