NFL suspends Dre Greenlaw one game for referee incident against Giants | Broncos notebook

Broncos inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been suspended for one game for unsportsmanlike conduct following a dramatic win over the Giants, the NFL said Monday.

The NFL cited Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1(b) of their rule book, which prohibits “the use of abusive, threatening or insulting language or gestures to opponents, teammates, officials, or representatives of the league.”

Greenlaw allegedly “chased after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as he tried to leave the field” after Denver had rallied to a 33-32 victory, the NFL said. He is eligible to return to the active roster following their home game Sunday against the Cowboys. Greenlaw will appeal the suspension, a source confirmed.

Barring a successful appeal, the one-game suspension will cost Greenlaw a game check of $192,778.

Alex Wilcox, a sports reporter and producer for KCNC-TV (CBS) shared a video on social media that followed Greenlaw after the winning field goal by kicker Wil Lutz. Greenlaw is seen chasing after the referee, Allen, and shouting after the game concluded. Outside linebacker Que Robinson helped to pull Greenlaw away from Allen.

Greenlaw made his Broncos debut Sunday after missing the start of this season with a quadriceps injury. He played 21 snaps on defense. Greenlaw was previously 49ers’ teammates with safety Talanoa Hufanga before both signed with Denver in free agency.

“That’s my dawg. He’s been my locker partner for the last five years now, a guy that I’ve just been truly an honor to share the field,” Hufanga said Monday. “And getting out there again it was just like you can see the intensity that he brings, the fire, the passion. He flies around and that’s who he is. It’s a true pleasure that I get to step on the field with him.”

Palcho review

Alex Palczewski stepped in at left guard on Sunday replacing injured starter Ben Powers (biceps) and inured backup Matt Peart (knee).

Palczewski earned a positive review from starting right guard Quinn Meinerz.

“He did great. For him to step up and play on the left side of the line — which he hasn’t done in like eight years, I think he was telling me — he did an incredible job,” Meinerz said on Monday. “He’s throwing his hands in pass protection. He was kind of a grinder in the run game. Keeping his feet moving and stuff like that. I think ‘Palcho’ did an incredible job. I tip my cap to him.”

Russell Wilson shade

Ex-Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson was benched in New York after three games this season with rookie QB Jaxson Dart nearly leading the Giants to a win in Denver.

Coach Sean Payton noted that decision, with a possible shot at Wilson, when speaking with reporters in his postgame news conference Sunday.

“They found a little spark with that quarterback,” Payton said of Dart. “I was talking to (Giants president and CEO) John Mara not too long ago and I said: ‘We were hoping that change would’ve happened long after our game.’”

Up next: Cowboys

The Broncos (5-2) host the Cowboys (3-3-1) on Sunday and must contend with a potent Dallas offense.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown at least three touchdowns without an interception in four consecutive games. Running back Javonte Williams, formerly with the Broncos, ranks second in the NFL in rushing yards (592) and third in rushing touchdowns (six).

“It’s one of those games where you’re just excited to compete,” Hufanga said on Monday. “All I can ever ask for is just the opportunity to go out on the field and play against a great team. … We know what we’re capable of. We have put it on tape. And now it’s just being consistent as much as possible.”

Briefly

The Broncos will wear their throwback uniforms, honoring the Orange Crush era, in three upcoming home games: Week 8 (Cowboys), Week 10 (Raiders) and Week 18 (Chargers). … Cornerbacks Pat Surtain and Riley Moss combined to allow zero receptions against the Giants on seven targets, according to Next Gen Stats. … Hufanga collided with safety Brandon Jones on a near interception. Hufanga said: “We’re both good.” … Ex-Broncos offensive lineman Ryan Harris was among roughly 40 players from the Super Bowl 50 reunion on Sunday at Empower Field. Harris said: “What the Walton-Penner group put together was incredible. We had an incredible time and each of us on that Super Bowl 50 team are grateful to the greatest owners in the NFL.” … The Broncos are three-point home favorites on Sunday against the Cowboys, according to ESPN Bet.
