10 of the best places to see fall transition into winter in Colorado

Snow has started to fall around Colorado, with the switch from fall to winter well under way.

Here’s a look at some of the best places across Colorado to see season change from yellow and red leaves to snow-capped mountains.

Editor’s Note: Some high-elevation areas can start to accumulate snow around this time of the year. Be highly aware of the forecast and existing snow, which could result in the risk of getting stuck and stranded. If you encounter snow drifts, turn around and change your plans.

  1. Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is filled with excellent opportunities to explore its mountain scenery – including high-altitude peaks and tundra. With its forests and high-elevation, RMNP is the perfect place to see snow begin to cover the trees and mountains.

2. Kebler Pass

This high mountain pass in Colorado connects Crested Butte and Paonia, passing through a large aspen grove. This makes it a great place to see the very last of the trees changing and the snow start to dust the landscape.

3. Independence Pass

This Colorado pass reaches over 12,000 feet between Twin Lakes and Aspen, so it’s a great drive to see some stunning Colorado scenery and enjoy views of the first snow. However, that pass does close for the winter, so you have to enjoy this drive in early fall.

4. Telluride

This mountain town provides excellent views of the dramatic scenery of the San Juan Mountains. Visitors can also take a scenic gondola ride to get aerial views of the aspen groves that surround the area.

5. Maroon Bells

These two bell-shaped peaks are said to be some of the most photographed spots in Colorado. The mountains are beautiful year-round, but especially so when the weather starts to get colder.

6. Crested Butte

Crested Butte is known for its vibrant fall colors, and it’s amazing skiing in the winter. This makes it an ideal spot to enjoy the beginning of the winter season, and get excited for skiing as the resort’s opening nears.

7. Steamboat Springs

Known for its famous “Champagne Powder” snow, Steamboat Springs provides plenty of wintery outdoor fun as the season changes. There are beautiful drives and hiking opportunities throughout the area. The town is also home to various hot springs, including Strawberry Park Hot Springs and Old Town Hot Springs.

8. Guanella Pass

As a more accessible destination from Denver and the Front Range, Guanella Pass is a popular leaf-peeping spot, and offers a great chance to see the first snow of the season.

9. Indian Peaks Wilderness

This area includes 73,391 acres with over 50 lakes, 28 trails that cover 133 miles, and six passes across the Continental Divide. Alpine lakes, including Lake Isabelle and Lake Blue sit at a perfect elevation for early snow.

10. Yankee Boy Basin

This area is surrounded by the Sneffels mountain range, and provides stunning mountain scenery. The high-elevation basin provides perfect views of snow dusted mountains while the lower areas stay golden.
