Colorado State using explosive offense in hot start to Ali Farokhmanesh era
FORT COLLINS — ButterBurgers for everyone.
There’s a new promotion at Moby Arena this season: if Colorado State scores 67 points in the game, visit a Culver’s location in Fort Collins or Loveland and get a free ButterBurger the next day.
If the first two games are any indication, Ali Farokhmanesh’s Rams are out to make sure no one goes hungry in Northern Colorado this basketball season.
After a 97-74 win over Omaha on Sunday, CSU is 2-0 to begin Farokhmanesh’s first season as head coach and the Rams have now scored 195 points across their first two games.
But it’s not just about the points, it’s the way they’re getting them, too. This new-look roster is sharing the ball with 17 assists on 29 made baskets vSunday, getting to the free throw line with another 33 attempts from the charity stripe and being efficient from deep with a team percentage of just under 37 percent on 29 attempts from beyond the arc.

“The best offensive teams in the country get to the free throw line, make open threes and also own the paint,” Farokhmanesh said. “We’ve done a great job. We haven’t shot many mid-ranges, to be honest, and that doesn’t mean we don’t let you do that. They’re starting to realize if we just continue to play offense, it’s harder to guard late in the (shot) clock when you still have the cutting and motion going on.”
Farokhmanesh has talked since the summer about the depth on this team and the fact that he feels like 12 guys could play big roles at any point during this season — evidenced by the fact that 11 players have gotten in the first two games while starting big man Rashaan Mbemba has been out with an ankle injury.
“I feel like they’ve all bought into a role,” Farokhmanesh said. “They’re all sacrificing something. For this team to reach its ceiling, they’re all gonna have to sacrifice something. It’s gonna change night to night and how they deal with that and how they’re willing to sacrifice for each other, that’s gonna determine how far we go as a team.”
The Rams are still going to need special individual performances, though, and they’ve gotten them from the same source in the first two games as Kyle Jorgensen, one of the few returning players, has had back-to-back games with a career-high scoring as he finished with a game-high 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field, 2-for-5 from 3-point range and 7-for-8 from the free throw line to go with nine rebounds.

“It’s given me the mindset to just keep going,” Jorgensen said. “A lot of people will have these two performances and maybe relax a little bit and just settle and be okay. I want to keep going. I don’t know if I’m going to keep stacking career highs like this, but I just want to keep playing great game after great game after great game.”
The sophomore from Minnesota has also formed a strong early partnership with Illinois transfer and Englewood native Carey Booth, who recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Omaha.
“He’s such a unique player,” Jorgensen said. “I’ve never really played with a guy who’s so athletically gifted, but can also shoot the ball well and can also play defense and rebound at a high level. He goes out with a great mindset every night, too. He’s still learning a lot, and honestly, he’s gotten way better since the summer.”

That’s the thing about this CSU team, you could say that about everyone on the roster.
“They’re all so different from one another,” Farokhmanesh said. “It changes how we play lineup-to-lineup, too. It’s difficult to go against at times. It’s a credit to our group of guys as a team, the way they play together.”
As long as they keep buying into the team-first mentality, there’s likely going to be a lot of nights like this at Moby Arena over the next few months.
And free ButterBurgers at Culver’s the next day, too.
“It’s hard not to have fun in a system like this when everyone’s sharing the ball and everyone’s getting quality shots,” Jorgensen said.
GAME RECAP
Colorado State 97, Omaha 74
What happened: The Rams (2-0) continued their perfect start to the Ali Farokhmanesh era with another dominant offensive performance as they pulled away from the Mavericks in the second half. Four different players scored in double figures as Farokhmanesh once again used 11 different players to keep fresh legs on the floor at all times and throw different looks at the other team.
Star of the night: Kyle Jorgensen’s hot start to his sophomore season continued with a career-high 25 points on just 12 shots that went with nine rebounds and two assists. The Minneapolis native smashed his previous career-best of 15 points, which he scored in the season opener against Incarnate Word.
Quotable: Just being able to get to my spot and where I want to go. I’ve always been a pretty good finisher. It was kind of that strength aspect that hasn’t been there. That healthy offseason really helped with just my confidence overall, too, being able to go to work every day and just trusting myself.” — Jorgensen
Up next: CSU’s three-game homestand to open the season concludes on Wednesday against Cal Poly. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Moby Arena with coverage on the Mountain West Network and 104.3 FM.
