Broncos vs. Chiefs grades: Another clutch win gives Denver control of AFC West

The Broncos moved to 9-2 on Sunday with a 22-19 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Empower Field at Mile High.

Here are the grades from the victory:

Offense

This group was better than it has been in the last couple of games, but still struggled to find the end zone, even with several chances. Denver settled for five field goals from Wil Lutz and a touchdown run from Jaleel McLaughlin, but it was enough to get the win. Quarterback Bo Nix threw for 295 yards and made several clutch throws to Courtland Sutton and Troy Franklin. The running game felt the loss of J.K. Dobbins as Denver rushed for just 59 yards.

Grade: B-

Defense

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes seemed to have a good plan to get the ball out quickly to avoid the Broncos’ vaunted pass rush. It worked at times, but Denver still had three sacks, including two by nickel cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian. McMillian also picked off Mahomes on the first drive of the second half to end a possible scoring drive. The defense came up big in the right moments.

Grade: A

Special teams

The Broncos were thrilled to have punt returner Marvin Mims back. The All-Pro had a 70-yard return that led to a field goal in the first quarter. Lutz made all five of his field goals, including the game-winner as time expired. And the Broncos got an extra point block from offensive tackle Frank Crum. For a unit that hasn’t been good recently, it was key to the victory.

Grade: A

Coaching

In a game full of flags, the Broncos were called for 10 penalties for 147 yards, including two pass interference calls on Riley Moss. It didn’t cost Denver in the game because the Chiefs had 10 penalties of their own. Coach Sean Payton’s game plan was solid after the offense’s tough showing against the Raiders.
