Broncos’ Alex Singleton seeks return to lineup Sunday, saying recovery from testicular cancer has ‘been so fast’
When it was revealed two weeks ago that linebacker Alex Singleton had undergone surgery for testicular cancer, the Broncos announced he “could return to play in the coming weeks pending additional test results.”
That indeed could end up being the case.
In an interview that aired Tuesday on “Good Morning America,’’ Singleton said he has set his sights on returning for Sunday night’s game at Washington. Singleton reportedly is expected to return to practice Wednesday after Denver had a bye week.
The team captain had surgery Nov. 7 and he and the Broncos revealed his condition Nov. 10. He had learned of his cancer Nov. 3, a week after he was flagged for failing a random NFL drug test. He played Nov. 6 against Las Vegas, the day before his surgery.
Singleton sat out Denver’s big 22-19 win over Kansas City on Nov. 16. He was replaced by Justin Strnad, who took over Singleton’s wearing of the green dot in calling defensive plays.

Now, with “Good Morning America” reporting Singleton’s recovery has “moved at a rapid pace,” he could be back for the Broncos after missing just one game.
“I’m happy I’ve had this positive outlook through it, because it has been so fast,’’ Singleton told “Good Morning America” in an interview from Broncos Park about his recovery.
The Broncos elected not to put Singleton on injured reserve following his cancer diagnosis, a sign they expected him to return before sitting out the required four games for a player being shelved.
Broncos coach Sean Payton on a conference call Monday declined to say whether Singleton or cornerback Pat Surtain II could be back at practice Wednesday. Surtain, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has missed the past three games due to a pectoral strain. He also was not placed on injured reserve, a sign the Broncos were hopeful he could return to face the Commanders.
Franklin-Myers remains in line for free agency
A source said the Broncos have not expressed an interest during the season about a possible contract extension for starting defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, an additional indication he is in line to become a free agent in March.
With the Broncos on Monday having signed kicker Wil Lutz to a three-year contract extension, Payton said “there are a few other players” they have “reached out to” regarding extensions. The team often has contract extension talks during a bye week.
Sources said the Broncos reached out to starting center Luke Wattenberg and Malcolm Roach, the top reserve on the defensive line, although it is unclear how those discussions have progressed. But a source said there has been no contact regarding a possible deal for Franklin-Myers, 29, in his eighth NFL season.
The Denver Gazette first reported in July that Denver did not intend to offer Franklin-Myers an extension before the start of the regular season despite the lineman wanting one. The Broncos did sign wide receiver Courtland Sutton, defensive lineman Zach Allen and outside linebacker Nik Bonitto to lucrative extensions before the start of the season.
After being traded in April 2024 from the New York Jets to Denver, Franklin-Myers signed a renegotiated two-year, $15 million deal. He had a career-high 7.0 sacks in 2024 and has 4.5 this season while having started 10 of Denver’s 11 games.

Cooks signs with Bills
Veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks signed Tuesday as a free agent with Buffalo.
There had been speculation that Cooks, 32, could end up in Denver after he was waived Saturday by New Orleans, due to his relationship with Payton. However, The Denver Gazette reported Monday after Cooks had cleared waivers that the Broncos were not in the mix to sign him.
When Cooks played his first three NFL seasons from 2014-16 with New Orleans, Payton was his head coach. Cooks had 1,000-yard receiving seasons for the Saints in 2015 and 2016 and has had six in 12 NFL seasons.
