Denver to activate cold weather homeless shelters
At the onset of cold weather, Denver’s Department of Housing Stability plans to open its shelters Black Friday.
It’s the second time this week HOST has opened its cold weather shelters. The shelters opened Tuesday night after it dipped below 25 degrees overnight in Denver into Wednesday morning. The shelter will open again after 1 p.m. Friday and “will remain open as long as cold weather conditions continue,” according to city officials.
The Denver Gazette’s news partner 9NEWS weather meteorologists predict temperatures could dip to a low of 24 degrees on Friday morning, then drop to 17 degrees overnight into Saturday.
At 1 p.m. Friday, HOST is opening the doors to all its emergency shelters. The facilities offer food, showers, a place to sleep and allows pets.
24/7 shelter is available at The Aspen shelter (former DoubleTree hotel), 4040 Quebec St. Other emergency shelters are located at 2601 W. 7th Ave. and 375 S. Zuni St.
Denver’s housing department activates cold weather shelters on nights when a cold weather advisory or extreme cold watch is issued, temperatures dip consistently below 25 degrees, or when it snows two or more inches.
Denver has yet to experience the latter this season.
This season, HOST officials said, the family shelter intake process is different.
Families seeking shelter are asked to go with their children to the Inn at the Highlands, 2601 Zuni St., to access services. Vouchers are no longer available over the phone.
Intake hours for family shelter vouchers begin at 7 a.m., on the day shelter activation, according to HOST.
“Voucher capacity has been expanded, and staffing at the Connection Center has increased to better serve families experiencing literal homelessness. If motel voucher capacity is reached, a dedicated family congregate shelter will be opened as backup when needed,” HOST said.
Families who need additional support or have questions can call the Connection Center at 303-295-3366.
“Front door” shelters are also available for certain homeless people.
Individual men: Denver Rescue Mission Lawrence Street Community Center, 2222 Lawrence St.
Individual women: Samaritan House, 2301 Lawrence St.
Youth/young adults ages 12-24: Urban Peak, 1630 S. Acoma St.
HOST offers daily transportation from downtown Denver shelters to cold weather shelter sites.
“Cold weather poses serious danger to individuals outside or without adequate heat, and the city encourages everyone in such situations to come inside,” Denver housing officials said.
More information on shelters can be found on the city’s website.
