Broncos place Luke Wattenberg on IR, sign Calvin Throckmorton, Marcedes Lewis to active roster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The season might be over for Broncos center Luke Wattenberg.

The Broncos placed Wattenberg on injured reserve Thursday after he suffered a shoulder injury in last Sunday’s 34-20 loss to Jacksonville. Wattenberg had been ruled out Wednesday for Thursday night’s game against Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium, with Alex Forsyth taking his place.

The Broncos promoted offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton off the practice squad, and he moved in as the backup center. The Broncos signed tight end Marcedes Lewis, 41, off the practice squad for depth at tight end due to Nate Adkins being out Thursday with a knee injury.

The Broncos also waived running back Cody Schrader and they elevated wide receiver Michael Bandy and linebacker Levelle Bailey off the practice squad to face the Chiefs.

Schrader was picked up off waivers Dec. 15. He is a candidate for the practice squad, with Denver now having three openings on it.

Bandy, now out of his three allowed elevations for the season, provides depth with wide receiver Pat Bryant out against the Chiefs with a concussion. And Bailey provides depth with linebacker Dre Greenlaw out with a hamstring injury.

Wattenberg will miss at least the final two regular-season games and the first two rounds of the playoffs. He was hurt against the Jaguars but still was in for all 66 snaps in the game. He played 99.6% of the snaps in Denver’s first 15 games.

Inactive for Denver against the Chiefs were Greenlaw, Bryant, Adkins, defensive linemen Jordan Jackson and Sai’vion Jones, outside linebacker Que Robinson and offensive lineman Geron Christian.
