Members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department participated in a wildlife rescue on January 13 that thankfully had a happy ending.

According to a report on the matter, an injured deer was found stuck on the ice at Curr Reservoir, which is located at the Country Club of Colorado on the southern side of the city. As a result of falling through the ice, the deer had ripped fur off of its leg, and while the animal was able to get out of the water, the ordeal left it exhausted and stranded in the middle of the lake.

When firefighters responded to the scene, two personnel geared up in full ice-rescue equipment and made their way out onto the ice. Upon reaching the deer, they found it to be “understandably frightened,” but were still able to secure a rescue harness to the animal.

At one point, firetruck driver and engineer Neilsen can be seen working to the calm the animal by petting it before bringing it to shore.

With the animal attached to a rope, it was pulled off the ice and once on solid ground, it was able to trot back into the wild.

“A big thank you to our friends at CPW for the call and partnership,” wrote the fire department following the response. “Teamwork made this rescue possible, and we’re grateful for the chance to help one of Colorado’s wild residents get a second chance.”

Not only did the animal get rescued, the mission also provided the crew with a chance to utilize ice rescue skills that can be similar to those used to save a human, too.
