Texas man convicted of assaulting two women in Highlands Ranch
A Texas man was found guilty Wednesday of assaulting two women in the bathroom of a Highlands Ranch home in 2024.
Zebediah Scales, 39, was convicted on four assault counts for beating up his girlfriend and her friend in the bathroom of his girlfriend’s home after accusing her of cheating on him on Nov. 2, 2024, according to a Wednesday news release from the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office. He faces two to 16 years in prison for the crime.
Scales has a criminal history that includes prior convictions for assault, assault with a deadly weapon and multiple drug offenses, according to the release. He fled to Texas while awaiting trial in the case but was arrested by local police and extradited back to Douglas County.
“The verdict proves that violence against women will not be tolerated in our community,” said 23rd Judicial District Deputy District Attorney Lindsay Tucker in the release. “While the harm caused to the victims cannot be undone, this defendant will be held fully accountable for his actions.”
That day, the two women were speaking in the bathroom — his girlfriend in the bath — when Scales came in and accused her of cheating, according to the release. He tried to drag his girlfriend out of the bathtub and the friend intervened; he then threw the friend to the ground and grabbed both women around the neck, trying to strangle them.
One of the women was able to call 911, and a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy arrived on the scene and saw deep bruising on the friend’s neck consistent with strangulation, according to the release. Scales told the deputy he didn’t know what had happened and he was asleep when the assault took place.
Scales will be sentenced on March 27.
