Hot Sulphur Springs hosts first Winter Sports Carnival | Feb. 10-12, 1912 | Colorado’s Top 150 Sports Moments
Happy birthday, Colorado — and Colorado sports.
Leading into the state’s 150th birthday Aug. 1, The Denver Gazette has partnered with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame to publicize the definitive list of Colorado’s top 150 sports moments.
Colorado Sports Hall of Fame historian Dave Plati and a committee of 10 compiled and will release the list every week until the No. 1 moment on July 31. Plati and Broncos icon Jim Saccomano will unveil the list weekly on a Colorado Sports Hall of Fame podcast at coloradosports.org/podcast/.

The Winter Sports Club of Hot Sulphur Springs hosted the state’s first Winter Sports Carnival that drew 8,000 spectators, including competitors. The competitions included sledding, skating, cross-country skiing and jumping. Norwegian transplant Carl Howelsen, who moved to the state a year earlier, was the star, winning the jumping event with a 79-foot leap. Hot Sulphur Springs is halfway between Kremmling and Granby. So, it does beg the question: in 1912, how did 8,000 people get there, and where did they stay?
