ICE protest plane flies over Broncos championship game
While the Colorado Army National Guard did its flyover of the Denver Broncos’ AFC Championship game on Sunday, another plane loomed in the distance.
MoveOn Civic Action, a nonprofit based around progressive causes, commissioned a small Cessna plane to fly around Empower Field at Mile High Sunday during the game where more than 76,000 people were in attendance.
The plane had a banner that read: “No ICE at Super Bowl. Text Melt to 668366.”
The phone number links to a petition against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers appearing at Super Bowl LX Feb. 8.
The petition has more than 154,000 signatures, according to MoveOn.
The banner came a few months after Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem made comments that ICE agents would be “all over” the Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California.
The airborn sign also came a day after 37-year-old Alex Pretti was shot and killed in Minneapolis by federal agents who said the man carried a gun and resisted being disarmed.
“This year’s Super Bowl should be remembered for big plays and Bad Bunny, not masked and armed ICE agents running around the stadium inflicting chaos, violence, and trauma on fans and stadium workers,” MoveOn spokesperson Britt Jacovich said in a press release regarding the Denver plane.
“I have the responsibility for making sure everybody goes to the Super Bowl, has the opportunity to enjoy it and to leave,” Noem said on “The Benny Show” podcast in October. She continued, saying people should not attend the event unless they are “law-abiding Americans who love this country.”
The plane was owned by Winged Vision based in Maryland.
