Kickin’ It with Kiz: Nuggets have only one chance to beat Thunder in the NBA playoffs
For the Nuggets to beat Oklahoma City in the NBA playoffs, someone has to step up and be an enforcer besides Nikola Jokic.
– Roberto, Denver
Kiz: Let’s get down to the real nitty-gritty. Without Aaron Gordon, I’m not so sure the Nuggets survive one round of the playoffs, much less have a chance to bump off OKC.
When you ask me 10 years from now about the U.S. men winning a gold medal in hockey, the only thing I will remember is the players chugging beers with FBI director Kash Patel. It only took about 30 minutes after they beat Canada to remind me American hockey players are spoiled kids.
– R.P., Broncos Country
Kiz: For crying out loud, these guys play a game where their teeth get knocked out. So it’s incredibly naive for anyone, including my media brethren, to expect Jack Hughes or Brady Tkachuk to carry the banner for any cause or campaign beyond winning a gold medal. Introspection isn’t their bag and most are ill-equipped to be agents of social change. But you do make one important point. More than once at the Olympics, when an American player was asked a question based on the 51st state controversy, I heard a U.S. staffer step in and say we’re here to talk sports, not politics. Fair enough. Why wasn’t that same logic applied when the door to the U.S. locker room swung open, and the FBI director was invited to drink beer with the boys?
Maybe Nathan MacKinnon and his friends on the Canadian hockey team should compete in Olympic ski-jumping, figure-skating or snowboarding if they want style points for their technique displayed on the ice.
— B.P., sharp claws
Kiz: I’m not rushing out to buy a “You be the judge” T-shirt. But if you’re asking me, no team in the Olympic tourney got less out of more talent than Canada. During the course of six periods and overtime in the medal round, the Canadians led for barely more than six minutes. That’s not even winning style points.
Downhill racer Lindsey Vonn might be tough, but she sure loves attention. Addicted to it. Screams: Look at me. Her accomplishments stand on their own merits, but from body-paint bikinis to posts about her love interests to the blow-by-blow on her latest injury, it all seems Vonn’s most relentless goal is fed by her need to stay relevant. You used to be able to see through this kind of stuff, Kiz. Are you hanging on past your prime, as well?
– Anthony, zero balderdash tolerance
Kiz: Vonn is a diva, and as far back as the Olympics in 2010, folks in her camp were upset with me for mentioning it. But she’s also fearless in a sport where a mistake could risk not only injury, but leg amputation. Vonn makes you look. That’s not by accident, because it’s also how a skier can earn $8 million in a year. Vonn is business savvy.
And today’s parting shot suggests that something beyond a healthy roster has been missing from these Nuggets.
Coaching. This team has a habit of shrinking in the fourth quarter.
– Jason, wants help for Joker
