Westminster police arrest man after he allegedly attempted to run over cops, led pursuit
Joseph Wrege, 45, was arrested Wednesday evening
The Westminster Police Department arrested a man on suspicion of multiple felony charges after he allegedly attempted to elude police Wednesday evening.
Joseph Wrege, 45, was arrested by officers on suspicion of vehicular eluding, vehicular assault, two counts of first-degree assault and multiple other charges after he allegedly tried to run over police before fleeing, according to a press release.
Officers initially responded to reports of a disturbance at the Comfort Suites located near 120th Avenue and Delaware Street around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. A clerk reported Wrege caused trouble in the lobby because he wanted a specific room.
Wrege was found to be wanted on multiple felony warrants in other jurisdictions — including failure to register as a sex offender and menacing with a deadly weapon, according to police.
As officers attempted to contact the suspect, Wrege drove away from the hotel. While fleeing, he allegedly attempted to run over officers and rammed into a patrol vehicle.
Officers followed the man until he crashed into a vehicle near Interstate 70 and Interstate 225 in Denver. The suspect, and one person from the other vehicle, were transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
Wrege was booked into the Adams County Jail after he was released from the hospital.
The incident was the third pursuit and crash in the metro Denver over the past week.
On Monday, 26-year-old Rohan Biswas ran a red light in Aurora and hit three vehicles including one carrying a family of six and a police car before he was partially ejected from his Tesla and died at the scene, according to the Aurora Police Department.
On Wednesday, Aurora officers pursued two people suspected of assault onto Interstate 225. While pursuing the suspect vehicle, another vehicle pulled in front of them and the motorist began shooting at the police cars, the department said.
The driver of the shooting truck, 31-year-old Aaron Wallace, was arrested after the truck flipped near Arapahoe Road.
