Broncos sign ‘cinderella story’ long snapper Zach Triner as offseason drills begin

The Broncos on Monday added to the roster a former lacrosse player who once sold mutual funds for Fidelity.

He is Zach Triner, who has been an NFL long snapper the past six seasons. He signed a one-year nonguaranteed contract for the minimum of $1.17 million to provide competition for incumbent Mitchell Fraboni.

Triner has a most interesting background. He began his college career in 2011 at Siena (N.Y.) College playing lacrosse and scoring one goal in 13 games. Then he transferred to Assumption University in Worcester, Mass., to play football as a defensive end and long snapper.

Triner went undrafted in 2015 and then sold mutual funds for Fidelity for several years in Boston, his home state. He didn’t give up, though, on his dream of making the NFL.

“He in the morning would go to work and he would snap in the afternoon,’’ Triner’s agent, Brooks Henderson, told The Denver Gazette on Monday. “He was really determined that he was going to (make the NFL) and he worked really hard.”

Triner spent time with the New York Jets in 2017 and was on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad in 2017 without getting into a regular-season game. But he made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 and won a Super Bowl ring in the 2020 season.

Triner was cut before last season by the Buccaneers but returned to get into six games in 2024, his sixth season. He was let go again and played in three late-season games with the Miami Dolphins while on their practice squad.

“It’s been a good ride for him, kind of a Cinderella story,’’ Henderson said. “It’s unbelievable. Zach has always had a tremendous drive.”

Triner had been a free agent since being released Dec. 16, 2024, by the Dolphins. Henderson said the Broncos reached out last week.

“They were just looking to add a second long snapper,’’ Henderson said.

Triner flew to Denver on Sunday and signed on Monday’s first day of offseason drills for the Broncos.

Henderson said Denver special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi got to see Triner plenty the previous six seasons in the NFC South when Rizzi had that position with New Orleans.

Fraboni has been Denver’s long snapper the past three seasons and re-signed last month on a three-year, $4.175 million contract with $1.7 million guaranteed. However, Henderson expects there will be competition between Fraboni and Triner for a roster spot.

“We would certainly hope that,’’ Henderson said. “That’s what he’s hoping. It remains to be seen, but there was an indication he would get a chance to compete.”

Triner’s signing gives the Broncos 71 players, and the NFL offseason roster limit is 90. However, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin doesn’t count against the roster limit during the offseason due to being an international player.

Sutton attends offseason drills

A source said wide receiver Courtland Sutton, as expected, was at Monday’s first day of offseason drills. Sutton, displeased with his contract, did not attend workouts last year until the mandatory minicamp in June. Sutton is seeking a contract extension but coach Sean Payton had said last month he would be on hand for offseason drills.

Briefly

Former Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who lives in the Dallas area, said he plans to attend next fall Denver’s 10-year reunion for the 2015 team that won Super Bowl 50. Former edge rusher Shane Ray, now with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, said he will attend if his schedule allows for it. … Broncos defensive John Franklin-Myers will hold his fifth annual free football camp June 13-14 in his hometown of Greenville, Texas. He will tutor ninth through 12th graders June 13 and first through eighth graders June 14.
