Colorado Avalanche to play Dallas Stars in first round of NHL playoffs

What seemed impossible three months ago is suddenly reality: The Colorado Avalanche will play Mikko Rantanen in the first round of the NHL playoffs.

With a shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks, the Winnipeg Jets clinched the Central Division title, guaranteeing that the Avalanche and Dallas Stars will play in round one. The Stars ousted the Avalanche in the second round of the playoffs in six games, so Colorado will be looking to exact some revenge on Dallas.

The rivalry was kicked up a notch when the Stars acquired the former Avalanche star Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes in March. Rantanen returned to Ball Arena to a mix of cheers and boos in late March, but he likely won’t receive as warm a welcome in the postseason.

The Avalanche won two of the three games the teams played, taking the season series. While nothing will be official for a few days, it’s expected the series will start in Dallas on either April 19 or 20. The Avalanche play their final regular season game on Sunday, so the league won’t want them sitting around for too long.
