I-25 improvement project will cause overnight closures through summer

The project will repave the five-mile stretch of Interstate 25 from Alameda to 44th avenues

The Colorado Department of Transportation warned of nightly closures along Interstate 25 this summer because of a repaving project.

The department will work on repaving and improving the surfaces of a five-mile stretch of I-25 between Alameda Avenue and 44th Avenue in central Denver, according to the transportation department. The work will also include repairing expansion joints between the roadway and bridges, new signs and restriping, the department said.

The project will also replace 2,700 linear feet of old concrete barrier segments with new ones along sections of I-25 next to the South Platte River between the US 6 on-ramp to southbound I-25 and the end of the southbound I-25 off-ramp to Alameda Avenue.

The project is set to begin on the evening of April 6 and will continue until early January.

From April 6 to late May, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., between Sundays and Thursdays, crews will replace barriers along southbound I-25 between the US 6 ramp to Alameda Avenue. This will require closings of the east and westbound US 6 on-ramps to southbound I-25 and the southbound I-25 off-ramp to Alameda Avenue.

At the same time, there will be single lane and shoulder closures on southbound I-25 in this area. Detours will be required.

From May to late October, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Sundays and Thursdays, a single lane closure will begin at 9 p.m. and then up to three lanes will be closed in each direction a few hours later on I-25 between Alameda and 44th avenues.

All lanes will re-open before 6 a.m. during the time period, the department said.

The ramp detours starting in April will include:

Those on US 6 heading to southbound I-25 on east or westbound US 6 will need to take southbound Kalamath Street to the Santa Fe/Kalamath on-ramp to southbound I-25.

Motorists traveling on southbound I-25 to Alameda Avenue will take the Santa Fe Drive Exit, proceed on South Santa Fe Drive, then turn left to cross Mississippi Avenue over South Platte River and then turn left on North Santa Fe Drive to Alameda Avenue.
